- Quinta da Vila Maria is a former wine merchant’s country
house, winery and
vineyard located in the beautiful and unspoilt
countryside of the Serra de São
Mamede Natural Park, near to the historic towns of
Portalegre, Marvão and
Castelo de Vide. Sympathetically restored this unique
house now provides 1 and
2 bedroom B&B holiday apartments with modern and
comfortable facilities, whilst
still retaining the original Art deco influences and other
period features such
as the beautiful floor tiles, wooden shutters and high
ceilings. The property
is officially licensed by the Ministry of Tourism of
Portugal as a Turismo
Rural – Casa de Campo.
Named after native NZ birds, our 1-bedroom
apartments “Kiwi” and “Tui” are for
2 guests and have lovely countryside views. Each offer
spacious bedrooms with
either a large double bed (1.6 x 2m) or twin single beds
(2m long), a private
bathroom with walk-in shower, a living/dining area with
comfortable leather
sofa, TV, stereo system, a dining table or breakfast bar
both with seating for
two and free WiFi, and a well equipped kitchenette with
fridge, hob/stovetop
and microwave oven/grill. Both are light, spacious and
contain everything you
need for a comfortable holiday, including bed linen,
kitchen linen and towels.
Continental breakfast, including fresh fruit, cereals and
homemade marmalade,
is provided every day in your apartment so you can
have breakfast at any time
you want, either in your apartment or outside on the
front patio. There are
also tea and coffee making facilities in the apartment.
The large patio at the front of the house is the perfect
place for breakfast as
it gets the morning sun. There is another terrace next to
the water fonte with
beautiful views over the vineyard and across the valley.
Here you can relax in
the shade of the palm tree and listen to the gentle
burbling of clear spring
water into the fonte.
The house is set in 3 hectares of land separated into an
organic, traditional
vineyard and pasture. The vineyard is still in production
and we grow organic
grapes for a local winemaker. Many of the vines are very
old and grow in the
traditional Portuguese way, like a bush. In early spring,
after pruning, they
look like sculptures, all gnarled and twisted, an
interesting study for those
who like drawing or painting. The adega, which is now
our reception, still has
the original adobe pots which were used to make the red
wine.
We have many olive trees amongst the vines and on the
land, one of which is in
the region of 1000-2000 years old, so you’re sure to find
a shady spot to sit
on a hot summer’s afternoon. There are also cork,
orange, apple, pear, fig and
walnut trees. Animals and birds regularly seen around
the Quinta include
lizards, geckos, frogs, treecreepers, little owls,
blackcaps, bee-eaters,
hoopoes and cattle egrets. Guests are very welcome to
walk around the Quinta’s
land and enjoy the restful atmosphere.
The barns and other outbuildings are largely undisturbed
and are full of old
agricultural implements and wine making equipment.
We are happy to show guests
round and share some of the history of this remarkable
house.
We live at Quinta da Vila Maria so we can offer you our
personal attention
throughout your stay. Whether you need directions to
somewhere, advice on the
best restaurants or just a friendly chat at the end of the
day, we are here
when you need us, there in the background when you
don’t.
- The Quinta is in a peaceful location on the edge of the
friendly village of
Reguengo in the Serra de São Mamede Natural Park.
The Park is a protected
nature reserve, lying along the border with Spain,
created to protect wildlife
and unusual plants and preserve local traditions. Here
you will discover clean
air, panoramic views as well as rare native flora and
fauna.
For walkers, bird watchers and mountain bikers there
are quiet tracks and roads
through the hills to explore. Walking trails, flanked by
ancient stone walls,
lead you through glorious countryside, pine forest and
groves of chestnut and
cork trees. The well marked Requengo walking trail
starts and finishes in the
village making it easy to do at least one walk and enjoy
the peace, solitude
and beautiful views so typical of this area. We have self-
guided walking maps
and notes produced by the Park authority available in
reception for the various
walking trails.
The Park supports more than half of the species of birds
that breed in Portugal
and is a stopping off point for many birds migrating
between Africa and
Northern Europe so there’s plenty for bird watchers to
look out for.
If you can’t bring your own mountain bike with you we
can arrange the hire of
mountain bikes for you (at very reasonable rates); just
let us know beforehand.
Or if you’d like to explore the Park on horseback we can
also arrange this with
a horse trekking centre near Marvão who offer various
guided rides through the
Park.
The Quinta also makes an excellent base for sightseeing
and soaking up
Portuguese history. There are many historic towns,
castles and other places of
interest within easy reach; such as Marvão, Castelo de
Vide, Portalegre, the
Roman city at Ammaia and villa at Torre de Palma, the
Coudelaria (National
horse stud) at Alter do Chão and numerous Neolithic
remains. Slightly further
away but still an easy and scenic drive are the historic
towns of Estremoz,
Badajoz and Elvas, the latter with its amazing
Napoleonic fortifications, the
wonderful small town of Vila Viçosa with its incredible
ducal palace and the
extensive and amazing Roman remains at Mérida.
If you are interested in wine, Reguengo and the
surrounding area is a renowned
wine producing region with a number of vineyards
nearby. If you would like to
visit a vineyard and do some wine tasting let us know
beforehand and we can
arrange a visit for you.
There is a beautiful, open-air swimming pool with picnic
area in Reguengo, a
pleasant stroll from the house; or just 15 kms away
there is the river beach
and swimming pool at Portagem with picnic area, kiosk,
restaurants and cafes
nearby (pools and river swimming are seasonal).
Portalegre is just a 10 minute drive from the Quinta and
has numerous cafes,
many restaurants, seven supermarkets and the twice
weekly Municipal Market, a
great place to buy fresh produce from local suppliers.
There are also good
local restaurants, serving delicious traditional food and
Alentejo wines, in
the nearby villages of Salão Frio and Caia.
To get the most from your visit to this area a car is
recommended. Lisbon
airport is an easy 2½ hour drive away, Badajoz airport
about 1¼ hours, and Faro
airport is about a 4 hour drive. Once you arrive at the
Quinta private off-road
parking is available through the main gate or if you
prefer parking is also
available alongside the road in front of the house.
